Bazi (八字) translates to “eight characters” — four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches representing your year, month, day, and hour of birth. Each pillar carries an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and a polarity (Yin or Yang).
The day master — the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — is traditionally considered the most important element in your chart. It represents your core identity and determines how you interact with the other elements in your chart.
This calculator shows three of your four pillars. The hour pillarrequires your exact birth time and reveals the most personal layer of your chart. Without it, you're seeing 75% of the picture — accurate for zodiac animal and day master, but incomplete for detailed analysis.

Can AI Calculate Your Bazi?
Short answer: not reliably. Bazi calculation is deterministic math, not language prediction. The day pillar alone requires a Julian Day lookup, modular arithmetic against a 60-unit cycle, and correct handling of the lunar year boundary in January and February. These are table lookups and arithmetic operations — exactly the kind of thing large language models are worst at.
The most common failure: ChatGPT assigns the wrong zodiac animal to people born in January or early February. The Chinese zodiac follows the lunar new year, not January 1st. A language model has no calendar engine — it guesses based on the year number, and gets boundary cases wrong.
Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches follow strict mathematical cycles (10 and 12 respectively, combining into a 60-unit sexagenary cycle). An AI chatbot treats these as words, not as positions in a cycle. It can describe what a Wood Rat year means, but it cannot reliably compute whether a given date falls in a Wood Rat year.
For Zi Wei Dou Shu, the gap is even wider. ZWDS places over 100 stars into a 12-palace chart using a multi-step algorithm that depends on lunar month, birth hour, and five-element interactions. No general-purpose AI can execute this algorithm — it requires specialized computation, not text generation.
Bazi is astronomy, not astrology in the loose sense. It requires exact calculation. This calculator uses the same deterministic formulas that traditional Bazi masters rely on.
Even With the Right Chart, Can AI Read It?
Calculating the four pillars is step one. Interpreting them is where general AI really falls apart.
Bazi interpretation requires reading all four pillars as a system — not individually. There are dozens of cross-pillar interactions, hidden stems within each Earthly Branch, and timing layers (luck pillars, annual pillars) that change the entire reading. The same day master in two different charts can mean completely different things depending on what surrounds it.
A general chatbot gives you generic element descriptions: “Wood people are creative.” That is zodiac-level analysis. A real Bazi reading looks at element balance, identifies which elements are useful or harmful to the day master, maps relationships between pillars, and layers timing on top. It is closer to structural analysis than personality profiling.
Think of it this way: a chatbot can tell you what the ingredients in a recipe are. It cannot taste the dish. Bazi reading requires tasting the dish — understanding how all the elements interact as a whole, not just listing them.

What is the difference between this calculator and the full app?
This calculator shows three pillars from your birth date (year, month, day). The app adds the hour pillar (which requires your birth time), calculates your complete Zi Wei Dou Shu star chart, and generates personalized readings using your full four-pillar chart. The hour pillar is often the most personally revealing.
Is ChatGPT accurate for Bazi?
