Life Palace

命宮 · mìng gōng

Overview

The Life Palace (命宮) is the most important palace in a ZWDS chart. It defines the person's core temperament, natural inclinations, and the overall direction their life tends to take. The stars placed here by the birth chart set the foundation — every other palace is interpreted in relation to this one. A person with the Emperor Star in the Life Palace carries a fundamentally different baseline than someone with the Harmony Star here, even if the rest of their chart is identical.

What This Palace Governs

Personality, temperament, life direction, physical appearance, and first impressions. The Life Palace is the reference point for interpreting all other palaces.

Palace Relationships

In ZWDS, palaces interact through structural relationships. The three-harmony group (三合) shares influence, the opposite palace (对宫) provides a contrasting perspective, and adjacent palaces represent neighboring life domains.

Three-Harmony Group (三合)

These three palaces share influence and are read together as a group:

Opposite Palace (对宫)

The opposite palace sits directly across the chart and provides a complementary or contrasting perspective:

Travel Palace (遷移)

Adjacent Palaces

How to Read This Palace

Read the Life Palace first, then its three-harmony palaces (Career and Wealth) as a group. The opposite palace (Travel) shows how the person presents in unfamiliar environments versus their core self.
