About Qing Ming Festival
Qing Ming (Clear and Bright) falls on the solar term around April 4-5 each year. It is China's most important ancestral remembrance day, with origins dating back over 2,500 years to the Zhou Dynasty.
The festival stems from the belief that ancestors continue to influence the fortune of their descendants. By maintaining graves and making offerings, families strengthen their connection with departed loved ones and ensure the continued blessings of their ancestral line. The timing coincides with spring, when nature renews — making it a fitting time to tend to gravesites.
Traditions & Customs
Families visit ancestral graves to clean the tombstones, pull weeds, and make repairs. Food offerings — including favorite dishes of the deceased — are placed at the grave along with incense and joss paper. Some families burn paper money and paper replicas of goods for use in the afterlife. After the solemn rituals, families often enjoy a picnic near the gravesites. Spring outings and kite flying are also traditional Qing Ming activities.
