Vesak Day

Vesak Day commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death (parinirvana) of Siddhartha Gautama — the historical Buddha. It is the most important day in the Buddhist calendar and is observed by Buddhists worldwide.

In Chinese Buddhist tradition, the celebration emphasizes compassion, generosity, and mindfulness. Temples hold special ceremonies throughout the day, and devotees take the opportunity to renew their commitment to the Buddhist path through acts of kindness and spiritual practice.

Devotees visit Buddhist temples for prayers and dharma talks. The ritual bathing of baby Buddha statues is a central tradition, symbolizing purification. Many practitioners release captive birds or animals as an act of compassion. Vegetarian meals are prepared and shared. Some temples organize candlelight processions in the evening. Charitable acts — donating food, clothing, or money — are emphasized as a way to accumulate merit.
